Traveling Objects on Loan for Exhibition


This week we had the pleasure of assessing the condition of some unusual objects not often found in a book and paper conservation lab.  The objects, owned by the Winkler Center for the History of Health Professions at UCL, consisted of a child’s leg brace, a box of polio specimen slides from the 1960’s, and a group of honorary medals.

Before packing in bubble wrap, we first packaged up the metals with custom polyethylene foam supports, and made a special banker’s box with cloth ties and Tyvek covered Ethafoam supports to protect the brace during shipment. 

Each object received a full condition examination & formal written report, as well as photographic documentation of current condition.  These documents are sent with the objects to the exhibiting institution so that they may confirm their condition after transport, & ultimately we can confirm their condition upon return.
