This parchment diploma exhibited severe creases and undulations caused by fluctuating environmental conditions that led to the skin expanding and contracting at different rates. Several printed areas were obscured by the creases and any attempt to mat and frame the document would have been difficult in its current state.
Due to parchment’s unique method of production and its inherent resilience, it can be humidified and dried under tension in order to minimize planar distortions. The diploma was humidified with passive humidification then stretched and dried under tension, twice, before a final round of humidification followed by drying between felts. The result is a document which can be clearly read but still retains its unique surface texture. The diploma was then matted using Alphamat Artcare board and Japanese paper t-hinges adhered along its perimeter with gelatin.
